Tasting notes The 2009 Wilridge Viognier is a blend from two Yakima Valley Vineyards: Sugarloaf Vineyard in the Rattlesnake Hills portion of the valley and Two Coyote Vineyards in the main valley. Both vineyards feature warm days and cool nights which are perfect for ripening Viognier grapes while retaining flavor and acidity. Sugarloaf Vineyard is the latest project for veteran wine grower Joe Hatrup and is located near his Elephant Mountain Vineyard -- which has supplied Wilridge with Viognier and Syrah in the past. Two Coyote Vineyard is managed by Phil Cline and Abraham Gonzalez, who also manage Wilridge's estate vineyard on Naches Heights. The grapes were picked by hand at Sugarloaf on September 12th and at Two Coyote on September 19th. The grapes were transported to the winery in Seattle where they were hand sorted, crushed by foot, and gently pressed in whole clusters. Winemaker Paul Beveridge fermented the Viognier in stainless steel tanks to perserve it's fresh, fuity aromatics. The result is a bone-dry wine in a style typical of the Condrieu region of the Northern Rhone Valley, where Viognier originated.
The 2009 Viognier is straw yellow in color. The nose is redolent of white peaches and citrus fruits. The wine is dry and finishes with refreshing acitidy. It's medium bodied and meant for immediate enjoyment. Good on its own, the wine also pairs well with Asian cuisine and spicy foods. Try taking it to a picnic or barbecue on a warm summer's day.
